Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda: This is the primary location for gorilla habituation experiences, particularly in the Rushaga Sector of the park where 2 families of gorillas are undergoing the habituation process.

What You Need to Know as You Plan for Gorilla Habituation Experience

  • The Habituation Experience requires a certain level of fitness as you get to trek for hours in mountaneous terrain plus the thick and misty forest. 
  • Respect their Space; you are an intruder in their wild, its not only good to respect the gorillas, its also safe for the gorillas and you too and others on the group, keep that required distance and adhere to all the safety protocols and rules in place. 
  • The habituation experience costs more than an ordinary gorilla tracking, with a permit going at $ 1500. Irrespective of the proce, its very worth it, and very rewarding in all ways.
  • Book Habituation Permits in advance, these permits are only 8 Per day, so its advisable to book on advance. The drier season from December into March, June to September is the best times to do the habituation experience. Rainy season is more tricky as your treks are easily interupted. Regardless, Gorilla Habituation is an all year open activity.

Yes, safe protocols are put in place to minimize the risk of attacks by the gorillas to visitors, You are required to observe these protocols and rules too. Besides Visitors do not go for this exercise on their own, they accompany a team of researchers, zoologists, Doctors and rangers into the forest to observe the mountain gorillas,  these are familiar with the behavior of the gorillas and are able to manage any risks.

Gorilla Habituation Experience, takes a minimum of 5 Hours to the whole day, 4 hours are the actual hours spent observating the gorillas, the rest are for the trek which is not predictable, as you may not know the location of the gorillas, and their movements are purely influenced by the supply of food. If gorillas are close then you wont take so long, if they are far and high up in the hills, the harder the trek.

A Gorilla Habituation Experience Permit goes for $1500 for Foreign Non Residents. And there are no discounted permits

Currently there two Gorilla families that are undergoing the habituation, each group takes only 4 People, bring the total Gorilla Habituation Experience permits to 8 per day.
